Peter Mathews

Peter Mathews (b. 1944) was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and educated at Andrews University, the Royal Academy of Music in London (where he was one of the last students of pianist Myra Hess), and University of Missouri at Kansas City (where he earned an MM and DMA in Conducting). Mathews has maintained an active career as composer, choral conductor, and teacher of piano, music history, theory, composition, and orchestration. From 1977–82 he served as Composer-in-Residence at Grace and Holy Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Kansas City. From 1999–2010 he was Choirmaster for St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in DeLand, FL and taught music on the faculty of the University of North Florida from 2006–14.

As a composer, Mathews has written more than 185 compositions, of which more than eighty appear in the catalogs of many music publishers including Alliance, Choristers Guild, H.W. Gray, Kjos, Lawson-Gould, Lorenz, MorningStar, St. James Press, and Southern Music. His catalog contains works in many genres, with a particular focus on choral and vocal music.

A lifelong interest in French culture has taken him on a number of bike trips to study the cathedrals and great churches of France, many of which he has documented photographically.
