Arthur Frackenpohl

Arthur Frackenpohl (1924–2019) was born in Irvington, New Jersey. Educated primarily at the Eastman School of Music (BA, MA) and McGill University (DM), he also studied composition at Tanglewood in 1948 with Darius Milhaud and at Fontainebleau in 1950 with Nadia Boulanger. From 1949 until his retirement in 1985, he was a member of the faculty at the Crane School of Music at the State University of New York at Potsdam.

During his teaching career he taught composition, orchestration, theory, and piano. Frackenpohl's over 400 instrumental and vocal compositions and arrangements have been published with many leading publishers. He had a particular affinity for brass chamber music, and a number of his compositions in those genres have entered the standard repertoire. Frackenpohl's arrangements of classical works are also featured on several albums by the Canadian Brass.
